In May 1948, John Philips, a photo-journalist for Life magazine, was in the Old City on assignment with the Arab Legion. From 18 May, when the Legion’s attack on the Quarter commenced, until 25 May, the date of the Quarter’s capitulation, his camera documented the events.

“On the 19th of May I noticed Arab Legionnaires, in full battle dress, swarming to the Old City. There was no comparison to the inefficient Arab Liberation Army – these were well trained and well equipped regulars – the Israelis had a tough fight ahead.”.
