Jewish settlement in the Old City of Jerusalem during the Middle
Ages served as the historic foundation for the creation of the Jewish Quarter in
the current era. Its roots lie in the construction of the RAMBAN synagogue in 1267,
and it was curtailed by the War of Independence in 1948, when the Old City was conquered
by the Arab Legion. Renovation was possible only after 1967, when reconstruction
of the Jewish Quarter was first carried out. The reconstruction initiated then is
not yet complete.
No site exists today that is able to tell the story of settlement in the Jewish
Quarter. The Museum of the Struggle, which will be completed shortly, will tell
the story of 760 years of Jewish settlement in the Old City. Emphasis will be placed
on the struggle of 1948 and the rehabilitation after 1967.
