For 14 years, beginning in 1969 and ending in 1983, excavation and preservation activities in the Jewish Quarter revealed many archeological layers: The First Temple Period, the Return from Exile Period, the Hasmonean Period, the Herodian Period, and the story of continuous Jewish settlement of the Quarter were all detailed in depth.
The broad wall from the First Temple Period, the Israelite Tower, the 'Burnt House' and the Herodian Quarter from the end of the Second Temple Period, the Byzantine Nea Church and Cardo are only a partial listing of these unique and important finds.
The work is not yet complete, however. The time has come to renew the archeological work in the Quarter – to reveal new finds and to discover additional remnants of the past.
Future archeological projects include excavation of the Garden of Redemption and the additional excavation of the Nea Church. They will be carried out prior to the building of the new underground car park.
