According to tradition, the synagogue was established by Moshe ben Nahman Gerondi,
usually known by his Hebrew acronym the RAMBAN or Nahmanides, rejuvenator of the
Jewish community in Jerusalem during the Mameluk period in the 13th century. The
synagogue was restored and named after him immediately after the Six-Day War and
the reunification of the city.
